To our readers,
We often get a number of emails with a common theme: someone is alerting
us about a website that is selling fake merchandise (ebay seller, Amazon seller etc). And
they want us to do something about the fake merchandise. However, that is an issue that we
do not get involved in. We have a bottom up approach to dealing with the counterfeit handbag
market. We deal only in information. Informing buyers interested in authentic designer merchandise online
(as well as brick and mortar venues). Helping them decipher what may not be authentic designer
merchandise.
We leave the top down approach to law enforcement. Let them do the job of
disrupting the flow, sale, and manufacturing counterfeit merchandise.
As far as ebay, Amazon sellers go, we generally apply the same principle. We have
on occasion notified a specific seller that they may be unknowingly selling a fake, but we do not report sellers to ebay. We do not want to harm even one honest seller who may have been duped themselves. Generally, in these cases, if the seller is in fact honest and reasonable, they will rectify the situation (refund). The crooks will be crooks, regardless. So again, this is something that law enforcement, fraud protection departments etc should deal with. We are solely in the business of information. Trying to give the consumer a fighting chance.
We do have a
fraud page that if you think you are dealing with
an outright crook, you can
follow these steps.
Another topic that comes up a lot is the question of knowingly buying a replica bag or a fake. We often here people say, “What’s wrong with that?” “The companies are so rich…they charge so much…etc.” This is something that we cannot answer for anyone. It is a personal decision. All we try to do is show the person the bigger picture, all the angles. Things like: Fake merchandise is often times made in sweat shops, many times by children. The money has been linked to terrorist funding etc. But the decision to buy a knock off to save money inevitably lies with the person. We don’t dispute the facts that the designers have an enormous amount of money, and that the merchandise is priced high. But this just gets us into a conversation about what is right, wrong, justification etc. This is not what we want to engage in. We just provide information to help people avoid being ripped off, and find some good deals on authentic merchandise.
Thank you for stopping by!
