Spotting Phony Gucci Hardware - Packaging

In this guide we have illustrated some details about Gucci that will help you weed out the fakes. This is in no way a conclusive or complete guide to every detail about Gucci, but it has enough information to highly increase you chances of spotting the fake Gucci handbags. Combining some of these brand specific points with the universal tells we have listed should help keep you insulated from many of the fake Gucci handbags in the open market.

Note: Many of the images we show to highlight a specific tell, also have another tell within the same photo. When this occurs we will try to point out the secondary tell also. However, on occasion we may miss some of the secondary tells in the photos. So we encourage you the reader to inspect the images for other tells to help increase your spotting skills.

Hardware: Check the metal accents/screws/hardware on the bag. Look for the Gucci logo. The etched logo should also conform to the general Gucci handbag font details. However, it may not be perfect, because of the small, cramped spaces the logo will be etched into, but it should look very close the authentic Gucci font. Also, authentic Gucci Horsebit bags will have complete closed connecting rings, while counterfeits will have a break in the rings from the weld. We highlight this semi-universal handbag tell in more detail in our Balenciaga tutorial.

Below is an authentic Gucci hardware etching:

Note: [Image (left) is slightly dark, some of the details are harder to see than others]. Notice the correct font pivot points of the letters. The [U] has the correct left side of the letter wider than the right side. The letters [CC] have the bottom pivot in the same place, giving the letters the correct boxy look. The same detail is seen on the letter [G] also. And the [I] has the correct sized serif at the top and bottom of the letter. Compare these details to the fake Gucci etching (below).

Below is an image of a fake Gucci logo etched into the hardware:

Note: The two Gucci logo etchings (letters) are not equal width. The lower Gucci appears to be more puffy, and the upper logo looks thin. An authentic Gucci logo etching on the same snap, button etc, should be the same style, width, height etc. Also, some of the font details like the U having a thicker left side than right side are not detailed in the logo etchings, unlike the image (above) of a real Gucci etching. This detail would at least be semi-visible. Also, the letters [CC] in the lower, puffy etching look almost like horseshoes, with dramatic serif typeface at the tips of both ends of the letters. Both of the letters [I] on the upper and lower etching look like they do not have the serif typeface on either the bottom or the top of the letters on either etching. Compare the lack of serif on the letters [I], to the dramatic serif on the letters [CC], and the etchings become highly irregular. This is most obvious on the puffy, lower etching.

Below are some images of fake Gucci accessories. Gucci tags, authenticity card and boxes. All of these items are phony, some with obvious font problems.

Beware: Try not to focus too much on things like packaging/authenticity cards/care books because these things can be purchased (the authentic ones) and then added to a fake handbag package. So try not to exaggerrate the importance of scrutinizing these seperate items. However, they are a part of the overall handbag package and should always be inspected, but only as part of the overall handbag inspection, and not viewed as a conclusive tell itself. There is no substitute for the physical inspection of the handbag.
