(Lobster) clasp: The lobster clasp on a Tiffany bracelet or necklace should be quality workmanship. This is not unlike all fine jewelry clasps. Tiffany clasps should be of fine craftsmanship, and this is a detail that the counterfeit piece will usually lack. Below is an image of an authentic Tiffany lobster clasp: 
Below is an image of a real vs. fake clasp: [Note] Notice the “thumb” on the fake clasp is hanging lower that the real Tiffany thumb. This is due to a cheaply made spring mechanism inside the fake clasp. After a few uses the cheap spring will weaken and the thumb piece will begin to slip down. Also notice the real Tiffany thumb is set in place perfectly strait. 
Below is an image of a fake vs. real Tiffany lobster clasp: [Note] this image was used to show the effect of the loose thumb on the clasp. Notice how easy the real Tiffany clasp stands up compared to the fallen fake clasp. This is because the protruding thumb of the fake clasp creates an uneven surface to balance itself on, compared to the flat surface of the real clasp. 
Below is an image of a real vs. fake Tiffany clasp (backsides): [A pencil was used in this demonstration to keep the fake clasp upright] [Note] Notice how the thumb slide on the fake clasp is pressed against the right side of the wall, and the slider on the authentic Tiffany is centered perfectly. This is another example of the many tiny details that can be found upon inspection when comparing fake vs. real Tiffany. 
Below is an image of a real vs. fake Tiffany clasp (base of the neck): [The links had to be bunched up on the fake clasp to support it enough to get it to stand for the purpose of this demonstration] [Note] Notice the .925 is clearly etched into the base of the real Tiffany clasp, and on the fake Tiffany clasp the etching is so poor it is no longer visible, if it was even etched in at all. 
Font/stamps: Every Tiffany piece is stamped with the Tiffany & Co. logo and the silver mark (e.g. Tiffany & Co. 925, or T & Co. 925) Many pieces are stamped with the date the piece was trademarked, the Tiffany logo, and the metal content, in that order (e.g. 2001 Tiffany & Co. 925). The pieces by artists such as Elsa Peretti, Paloma Picasso, Frank Gehry etc, will be signed as well as stamped. (i) For a piece that has a chain and pendant (e.g. the Tiffany bar pendant), both the pendant and the chain will be marked Tiffany & Co 925. If the chain is marked but not the pendant, it's most likely that the pendant isn't Tiffany. Below is an image of a real Tiffany font/stamp: [Note] Notice the quality impression, the clear, crisp fonts and the perfectly centered stamp. 
Below is an image of a fake Tiffany font/stamp: [Note] Notice the sloppy impression, the uneven stamp and the overall lack of craftsmanship. Also this model has an incorrect Tiffany feature (see below). 
Beware: The heart charm on the toggle necklaces (above) is (*) Update[4/11/10] | Tiffany now offers a heart charm toggle with "Return to Tiffany" stamp, pictured [below]. 
[Update provided by: Yvette K.] [Tiffany doesn't make an engraved charm toggle necklace. Only the "lifesaver" part of the necklace is engraved with "Tiffany & co.”] [Note] The Tiffany round tag necklace is fastened in the back, as is the oval dogtag bracelet, and they are engraved with "please return to tiffany.” Only the heart toggle necklace, heart tag necklace and the oval dogtag necklace are fastened in the front.
