The retail tag is something that may or may not be part of your ebay or online purchase depending on whether or not the item is NWT (new with tag) or (NWOT) new without tag, pre-owned etc. But always keep in mind retail tags can faked too, as well as the real-on-fake tag trick where the counterfeiter puts a real tag on a fake item.

For BEBE SPORT see our tutorial sections (above) for links to the SPORT line. Below is an authentic Bebe retail tag: A): Image (A) pictured above is of the front of an authentic Bebe retail tag. This tag has a couple of important points. The tag itself is divided into three sections that can be torn off the tag. And it is important that the information in all three sections matches identically to each other. Note: The style number at the top of the tag (marked style) should be found on each of the two following sections above the bar code on the far right side. F/N: Also note the price. Bebe's higher priced items generally end in [9]. In image (A) you can see the price is set at US$ 69.00. Beware of higher end Bebe items ending in [4,5,6 etc]. *This price structure could change in the future for Bebe, but it is something worth keeping an eye on. B): Image (B) is the backside of the retail tag pictured in image (A). The important feature to note here is simply the dark line at the top and the bottom of the tag. This is a detail that some counterfeiters may miss. Bebe retail tag comparison: C): Image (C) is the label that was attached to the fake Bebe trench coat. This label is missing its second and third sections. But other than that, the label looks like a pretty good copy. When compared to the real label in (image A+D), everything seems to be in the correct places. However, upon close inspection, there are a couple a things that seem to be off. One is the Bebe logo. The Bebe logo looks slightly lighter than the real logo. However, the bar code and style information in image (C) appear to be darker. Also, the cardboard paper that the tag is printed on feels slightly thicker than the real tag in image (A). But these differences are so subtle, that it is difficult to tell whether this is a good copy or simply an authentic Bebe tag used on a fake item. The missing second and third pieces suggest that it could possibly be a real tag recycled on a fake item. This is the reason that secondary items like tags and authenticity cards are less important in determining a fake than the actual item details. There is no substitution for a thorough inspection of the physical item. A): Image (A) was re-used for reference. Bebe care, material and cleaning tag: D): Image (D) is of an authentic inner Bebe care/material label. The important point about this label is that is should feel smooth. The test we illustrate here is the rub test. Simply rub the label against itself and feel for any texture. An authentic Bebe label should not feel like sandpaper. It should have very little (if any at all) feel of granular texture. The label in image (D) when rubbed together had a quality sleek and smooth feel. E): Image (E) is the Bebe care label found inside the fake black trench coat. When this material/care instruction label was rubbed together a very distinct granular texture could be felt. It did not display the same smooth and sleek feel of the authentic Bebe material/care instruction label. This is a good test as it can be done in under a minute. Note: Obviously this test can not be done online. However it is good to keep in mind, when you finally get the item home take a second and test the inner care instruction label with the rub test. Bebe real vs. fake SpI (stitches per inch): F): Image (F) is of the authentic Bebe white top SpI level. Here you can see that the number of stitches per inch is about 12. This is evidence of a quality item. G): Image (G) is of the fake Bebe trench. Here you can clearly see that the number stitches per inch is drastically lower than the authentic Bebe. This is evidence of a lower quality stitch line. This type of lower SpI is common on many fakes from handbags to sneakers. It is a way for the counterfeiter to get the job done faster and with less resources. † More info on the importance of SpI (stitches per inch) testing. Bebe real vs. real SpI (stitches per inch): I): Image (I) shows the authentic Bebe white top SpI level of 14. What this section is going to do is compare two authentic Bebe items against each other to get an idea of an acceptable SpI range. [We will run the two number through our SpIT filter to determine an acceptable threshold.] II): Image (II) is of the authentic BEBE SPORT Jacket featured in our BEBE SPORT tutorial. Here we find that the SpI (pink stitch line) on this particular piece is 12. So we see that there is a 2 stitch difference in this example. When we run the numbers 14,12 through our SpIT filter the 12-14 range passes. This would indicate that an authentic Bebe SpI range is in the ballpark of 12-14 stitches. Note: To test the limits of the range we used our SpI filter and entered the stitch line of 14 into the Authenticspi box, and tested how low the lower bound could go before crossing the threshold and returning a fail reading. What we found was that the range could drop from 14 to about 11.662, and up to about 16.8, and still pass. Therefore a (liberal) Bebe SpI range is 11 - 16 stitches per inch. *This is if we call the 11.662 simply 11 stitches and consider the upper bound [of 16.8] 16. A slightly more conservative range could be considered 12 - 17 spi. † More info on the importance of SpI (stitches per inch) testing. ebay
